I’ve got this great neighbor who grew a huge tomato plant, however all the tomatoes stayed green. Since they’re leaving town, they said I could take the tomatoes. I can’t miss that chance, so I’m definitely going to make this recipe.

The history behind Fried Green Tomatoes is an intriguing blend of cultural influences and culinary evolution. Often associated with the American South, this iconic dish actually has its roots in the 19th century and was introduced by Jewish immigrants. Despite its later association with Southern cuisine, you would be surprised to find that the recipe didn’t make its appearance in Southern recipe books until after 1970. The journey of this beloved dish from its unconventional origins to its widespread popularity is a testament to the dynamic nature of food and its ability to transcend geographical and cultural boundaries.

I air-fried these and I was skeptical, yet they came out so really good. They were crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The seasoning I used was a blend by Cuisinart. Cooking with an air fryer can often lead to pleasantly surprising results, especially when it comes to achieving that perfect balance of crispiness and tenderness. It’s wonderful to find those kitchen victories that exceed our expectations. And using a flavorful blend like Cuisinart’s Sweet Paprika Seasoning can really elevate the dish, adding that extra depth of taste. It’s definitely a great feeling when a meal turns out even better than anticipated, isn’t it?

Start with green tomatoes, make sure to grab the firmest ones.

I used Oat milk, you can use buttermilk if you don’t mind keeping them dairy-free.

I used Rice flour instead of corn starch.

In place of Cornmeal I used Flax seeds, this is where I added the additional spices I wanted.

Last I used gluten-free panko, this could be skipped, and I am pretty sure the crispy texture will be the same.

Place the oat milk, rice flour, flax seed, and panko in separate bowls.

I dipped in the oat milk, rice flour, back into the oat milk then flax seed and panko last.

When it comes to preparing tomatoes for a recipe, slicing them thinly can make the task much easier. Thin slices of tomatoes not only add visual appeal to your dishes, but they also make the tomatoes easier to handle. Unlike ripe tomatoes, which can be soft and juicy, thinly sliced tomatoes maintain their firmness and structure, making them ideal for layering in sandwiches, salads, or other culinary creations. This technique also ensures that you won’t encounter any issues while slicing them thinly, as the firmness of the tomatoes allows the knife to glide through with ease. So, next time you’re working with tomatoes, remember that slicing them thinly not only enhances their visual presentation but also makes them more manageable in your culinary endeavors.

When it comes to air frying, the type of air fryer you have can make a significant difference in the cooking process. With air fryers that have shelves, like the one I have, you can enjoy the convenience of not having to manually turn the food to ensure even cooking. This can save time and effort, making the cooking experience more seamless. However, for those with traditional basket air-fryers, it’s important to remember to flip the food over halfway through the cooking process. This simple step can make a big difference in achieving that desired crispy texture on both sides of the food. So, whether you have a shelved air fryer or a basket one, mastering the cooking techniques specific to your appliance can elevate your air frying game and help you create delicious, crispy dishes every time.

Upon revisiting the recipe, I found that the texture of the gluten-free panko stood out more compared to regular panko. To enhance the adherence, consider crushing the gluten-free panko further for a more cohesive texture. Nevertheless, the end result is a delectable dish that is sure to be enjoyed by all your friends and family.

This is one of those easy recipes, no real measuring just plop, dump, and cook. Easy peasy.

I love to cook and travel. There is nothing like experiencing new cultures and of course the food. I am really happy doing charcuterie trays, this has been my new obsession for the last two years. So much creativity and fun goes into each board.

I have no formal training in nutrition or in cooking, however, I love to do it and my family reaps the benefits.

Enjoy the blog, I would love to hear from you!
